The ATNBC Executive Board met Monday, May 24, 2010, at Thornton Education Center, Harding University, in Searcy at 5:30 p.m. Members present were Mara Cawein, Nancy Fancyboy, Terri French, Marilyn Friga, Vera Leath, Cyndi Matthews, and Jamie Reed.

Cyndi Matthews, president, called the meeting to order and welcomed our two newest members, Marilyn Friga, Membership/Nomination Chair, and Jamie Reed, NBPTS Relations Co-chair. Cyndi updated the board member contact list and will email out to members.

Minutes of the last meeting were read and Nancy Fancyboy made a motion to approve the minutes, Marilyn Friga, seconded the motion. Mara Cawein, treasurer, gave a treasurer’s report, with a current balance of $9, 297.91. Marilyn Friga, Membership Chair, will pass out new brochures at upcoming teacher workshops, conferences, etc. Terri French, Public Relations Chair, will contact Michael Rowland for approval to hand out brochures at Governor Recognition on June 16 for new NBCT’s. Jamie Reed, NBPTS Relations Chair, gave an update on the national website. Renewal candidates should not download the PPG until July. Nancy Fancyboy, Legislative Issues Chair, gave report on legislators who support NBCT’s and encouraged us to support these legislators. Board members pictures and biographies will be emailed to Amy Jones, Technology Chair, who will update the website.

Tentative dates considered for our next annual conference were January 22, 29, and February 5. Dr. Carroll will check the Harding calendar for availability. We plan to invite Dr. Jerry Parks as our keynote speaker as soon as our date is finalized with Harding. Members should bring suggestions for theme for conference at next meeting.

The scholarship criterion needs to be reworded for clarity. Mara will make revisions and bring to next meeting to vote for approval. Criteria to be eligible include: member of ATNBC, attend conference, and be out of pocket $350 or more (candidate or renewal). T-shirts will be included in the conference fee and the registration form will include t-shirt size to encourage teachers to turn in registration early.

The board discussed effective ways to announce the upcoming conference. Suggestions included putting ATNBC on Facebook and link it to our website and Nancy and Cyndi will check on it. A distribution list will be started this fall and support groups will be contacted. Letters/save the date info can be sent to school superintendents and co-ops. Cyndi will email members for possible dates in August or September for our next meeting after the conference date is finalized. The meeting was adjourned at 7:25.

Past Annual Conferences

February 6, 2010  - Keynote address by Corey Oliver

The Arkansas Legislature has passed a law making the state NBCT stipend count toward teacher retirement, but, according to the AEA, failed to vote any funds for the measure.

Several Arkansas NBCTs attended the NBPTS national conference in Atlanta in July, 2009, and reported it to be a valuable experience.  They urge you to make plans to attend the next conference . . .  wherever and whenever it may be.
